Manufacturer of chopping devices for ships and berths

Ten years of "OSK"
February 13, 2025

The United Shipbuilding Corporation celebrates its 10th anniversary, having "raised" the Russian shipbuilding industry.

A little history

Russian shipbuilding dates back to 1667. Exactly 350 years ago, near Moscow, on the Oka River, the first Russian sailing warship, named "Oryol", was laid down.

In the summer of 1693, Tsar Peter I laid the foundation for the first state-owned shipyard in Arkhangelsk for the construction of warships. The 24-gun ship Apostle Paul, the frigate Holy Prophecy, the galley and the transport ship Flamoff formed the first Russian military flotilla in the White Sea. By 1714, Russia had its own sailing fleet.

By the end of the 18th century, the Russian Navy had become the third largest in the world. However, by the end of World War I, our combat fleet had practically ceased to exist, and it had to be revived, but at a new level.

The Soviet Union was a powerful shipbuilding power. Almost all types of ships were built in the USSR - missile carriers, aircraft carriers, trawlers, dry cargo ships, tankers, nuclear submarines, icebreakers and small vessels.

In the 1990s, the domestic shipbuilding industry was in decline. Disparate factories, accustomed to centralized management under the USSR, had a hard time "going it alone" and literally degraded. Military-oriented enterprises were seriously underutilized, and defense orders were fulfilled with significant delays. In the civil sector, the situation was no better: most orders from private shipowners were placed abroad, and the competence in building seagoing vessels was practically lost.

How USC began

At the end of 2006, the idea of integrating Russian shipbuilders into a single holding was first voiced.

As a result, in March 2007, the United Shipbuilding Corporation appeared on the business map of Russia - a new powerful structure that absorbed the key shipbuilding resources of the country. According to the decree of the President of Russia No. 394 signed on March 21 of that year, all state shipbuilding assets were included in the "USC". The formation of the "USC" was fully completed in 2010.

A single center was created, capable of lobbying the interests of shipbuilders in their dialogue with government agencies and foreign partners, and conducting a centralized marketing and investment policy. It became possible to formulate a common ideology and economic strategy for Russian shipbuilding and move to global business standards.

Reasons for pride

In October 2013, the USC board of directors approved its development strategy until 2030. The moderately optimistic scenario assumes an investment volume of 1.14 trillion rubles by this date, including 65% of budget funds, revenue growth to 600 billion rubles per year, and a reduction in the cost of USC products to the world average.

In 2014, Russia became the world leader in the export of warships by displacement thanks to the delivery of the aircraft carrier Vikramaditya (formerly Admiral Gorshkov) to the Indian Navy.

As of 2015, USC ranked 19th in the Top 100 Largest Defense Companies in the World according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). In addition, in 2015, USC was among the top three winners of the All-Russian competition for the title of "Organization of the Defense Industry Complex with High Socioeconomic Efficiency."

The Group's revenue has been growing for three years in a row. In 2016, it was estimated at a figure close to 350 billion rubles, and net profit was about 7 billion rubles. The company's order portfolio until 2025 amounts to about a trillion rubles.

The pride of "OSK" The following projects have emerged: class 22350 frigates, class 20380 corvettes, class 11356 patrol ships, class 22800 Karakurt small missile ships, class 12700 composite minesweepers. A special place is occupied by the newest ships of the submarine fleet: project 885 Yasen and project 955 Borei nuclear submarines. And, of course, the first military icebreaker in 45 years, the Ilya Muromets, the most powerful nuclear icebreaker in the world, the Arktika (project 22220), and the unique floating nuclear power unit, the Akademik Lomonosov. There are still many different ship projects ahead.

Foreign customers were attracted by the non-nuclear submarines of Project 677E “Amur-1650” with air-independent energyinstallation, Amur-950 submarines, Piranha-T small submarines, P-650 submarines, Project 22160 and 22460E patrol ships, Project 12300 Scorpion missile and artillery boats, Project 12200 Sobol patrol boats.

Today, USC, which includes up to 80% of the shipbuilding industry, includes about 40 enterprises and organizations: the main shipbuilding and ship repair shipyards, leading design bureaus. In total, USC employs more than 80 thousand people.

Over the past 10 years, USC has become a large multi-profile complex, including a wide network of design bureaus and research centers, shipyards and repair facilities, as well as port and transport infrastructure.
