Four new Arctic integrated emergency response centers will be set up in the settlements of Pevek, Tiksi, Dikson, and Sabetta to enhance maritime safety along the Northern Sea Route. The announcement was made during a meeting of the State Commission Presidium on Arctic Development, according to the press service of Russian Deputy Prime Minister and Presidential Envoy to the Far East, Yury Trutnev, on May 31.
In addition to the new centers, seven Arctic air rescue units are planned for deployment in Arkhangelsk, Murmansk, Sabetta, Dikson, Tiksi, Pevek, and Anadyr, significantly improving response capabilities in remote northern areas.
As part of a pilot project, the first of the four emergency centers began duty in Pevek in March 2024. An aviation unit is scheduled to become operational in July.
During the meeting, officials also discussed the co-location of facilities for the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM), the Federal Biomedical Agency (FMBA), and the Marine Rescue Service, aiming to create a unified response infrastructure for emergencies in the Arctic.
Following the discussions, Yury Trutnev instructed EMERCOM to explore the possibility of conducting joint training exercises focused on rescuing people in emergency situations in the Arctic.
