On January 26, 2024, a ceremony marking the laying down of a new nuclear icebreaker of Project 22220, named "Leningrad," took place at the Baltic Shipyard in Saint Petersburg. The event was attended by the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin.
According to the president, the new vessel will symbolize the heroism and resilience of the residents of Leningrad, especially in connection with the 80th anniversary of the city's liberation from the blockade.
The "Leningrad" icebreaker will be the sixth ship in the series of nuclear-powered icebreakers of Project 22220. The construction is being carried out under a contract with FSUE "Atomflot." Previous ships, such as "Arktika," "Sibir," and "Ural," have already been delivered to the customer, and work continues on "Yakutia" and "Chukotka."
A distinctive feature of the new vessels will be the upgraded electric propulsion system, which significantly enhances their operational performance and efficiency in the harshest Arctic conditions.
