On December 15, Oksky Shipyard marked a significant milestone in the construction of tugboats for the Marine Rescue Service with the launch of the lead tugboat of the NE025 project, "Timan". The event was reported by Sudostroenie.info.
"Timan" is the first of five tugboats being built as part of a series for the Marine Rescue Service. All five vessels were laid down at Oksky Shipyard on December 16, 2021, and under the contract, they are to be delivered to the customer in 2023.
The tugboat was named after the Timan Ridge, a geographical feature located in the northeast of the East European Plain, stretching from the Cheshskaya Bay of the Barents Sea southeastward.
It is planned that the first two tugboats will be assigned to the port of Murmansk, two more to the port of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, and one will be assigned to the port of Arkhangelsk. The construction of these vessels is part of the strategy for the development of the Northern Sea Route infrastructure until 2035, as well as the federal "Northern Sea Route" project, which is part of the Comprehensive Plan for the modernization of transport infrastructure until 2024.
The new tugboat is designed for participation in rescue and emergency operations, as well as for ensuring the safe maneuvering of large vessels in complex areas of ports and harbors along the Northern Sea Route. Its Arc4 ice class will enable the vessel to operate effectively in Arctic waters.
