As of February 15, Russian fishermen have resumed capelin fishing in the Barents Sea, harvesting 9,300 tonnes of fish — 33% of the total national quota set for 2022.
The overall capelin quota for the year stands at 27,800 tonnes. The fishery was reopened after a three-year hiatus due to previously low stock levels in the region.
Currently, seven Russian vessels are engaged in the fishery, operating in accordance with established regulations and quotas to ensure the sustainable recovery of the capelin population in the Barents Sea.
The decision to resume fishing was made based on improved stock assessments and a more favorable environmental outlook in the region.
