It has happened! Our city now has its own three-masted beauty-sailboat! The frigate "Khersones", which was undergoing repairs at the Sevmorzavod, today acquired a Sevastopol "registration". More precisely, in naval terms it sounds like: the home port is Sevastopol, blogger Yuri Yuganson shared the news on his LiveJournal page.
— When we accepted this vessel, we saw a nightmare there. The vessel's mechanisms were completely "killed", they required a complete overhaul. The mainmast had rotted to the base, we had to weld a new one. We completely replaced the galley, the entire navigation system and the mainmast. The only thing that was well preserved there was the cabins, recalled the general director of the federal state enterprise Rosmorport.
Now the sailing ship Khersones will be based in Sevastopol. Regular calls of the ship to the ports of Crimea and mainland Russia on the Black Sea are planned. In addition, the ship is planned to be used for tourist excursions.
The Khersones is a three-masted training sailing ship, built in 1989 in Gdansk (Poland) according to the prototype of sailing ships of the early twentieth century. The ship's 26 sails are controlled exclusively by hand. Two engines are used for navigation in stormy conditions, as well as when entering and leaving the port.
From 2006 to 2015, the vessel was laid up in the port of Kerch. In April 2015, the ship was transferred to the balance sheet of the Crimean Basin Branch of the Federal State Unitary Enterprise Rosmorport.
