This Day in History: 35 Years Since the Flag Was Raised on the Sailing Ship Khersones

March 28, 2024, marked the 35th anniversary of the day when the national flag of the USSR was ceremonially hoisted aboard the Khersones, a three-masted training frigate operated by the Crimean branch of FSUE Rosmorport. The historic event took place in 1989.

To commemorate the occasion, a celebratory event was held on board with the participation of the branch’s leadership, representatives of the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping, and the ship’s crew led by Captain Aleksandr Onishchenko.

This year, Khersones will be the first training vessel of Rosmorport to begin the 2024 navigation season. The journey will start from Sevastopol and continue to Sochi, where cadets and mentors from maritime universities will join the ship.

The sailing vessel was built at the Gdańsk Shipyard in Poland.
