Metal Cutting for the "Kamchatka" Nuclear Icebreaker — Sixth Ship of Project 22220 — Has Begun

At the Baltiysky Zavod, part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC), the metal cutting process has started for the sixth universal nuclear icebreaker of Project 22220, which will be named "Kamchatka." The metal cutting began on August 14, as reported by the press service of the company, according to Sudostroenie.info.

The cutting of specialized steel for the hull of the future icebreaker commenced using plasma cutting machines in the hull processing workshop. Representatives of the customer — FSUE "Atomflot" — and the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping were present at the event.

Yuri Gordienkov, the CEO of Baltiysky Zavod, emphasized that the continuation of the construction of this series of icebreakers ensures the stable development of the factory, providing orders until 2030. This will not only facilitate the modernization of the production but also create new jobs, which is crucial for both the factory and the regional economy in the current circumstances.

It should be noted that the fifth icebreaker of Project 22220 will be named "Kamchatka," and this vessel is set to become an essential part of Russia's updated icebreaker fleet.
